It is the first time that Alessi is addressing the universe of childhood directly. Certainly not due to lack of interest, but rather because we are aware that the “child” theme is a delicate and difficult one, especially given the point our consumer society has currently reached. Our decision was to work on really evolutionary objects for children, which means not in the alienating direction that much of the industry dedicated to this sector appears to have taken. In fact, we have the impression that in most cases the industry attacks the theme with an attitude lacking in sensitivity as far as the most recent pedagogic research is concerned, and with total lack of judgment falls prey to the precepts of new technology (multimedia, electronic gadgets etc). What we would like, however, is to concentrate on the child’s potential for growth, offering objects that will help her or him to grow and really develop the enormous potential of an all-round human being. So we would like to steer clear of the miseducating dimension typical of far too many objects that target children. For these reasons, we engaged the assistance of Reggio Children as a pedagogic and cultural consultant for our project. This pedagogic organization of the city of Reggio Emilia is world-famous. The designs we are presenting now are just the beginning of a collection that we intend to extend beyond the realms of household objects for children, and which will include other items useful for a child’s evolution, like small lights, games and toys.
